Head-to-head comparison: 575C vs 615C

As Fishing Monthly’s Steve Morgan puts it: “The question is not whether you should buy a Bar Crusher… it’s which Bar Crusher is the best for you?” In a direct comparison of two of our most popular models – the 575C and 615C – this head-to-head boat test may assist in making your Bar Crusher boat buying decision easier…

Two of Bar Crusher’s Most Popular Midsize Boats

Fishing Monthly’s Steve Morgan put two of Bar Crusher’s most popular midsize models, the 575C and 615C, head-to-head on Port Phillip Bay, with Bar Crusher’s Matt on hand to walk through the differences. The framing from the outset: this isn’t about whether to buy a Bar Crusher. It’s about which Bar Crusher fits your fishing.

All-Rounders, Both of Them

Both boats are true all-rounders. They can run 30km offshore, fish a chopped-up bay, head up an estuary or tow the kids on a biscuit, all from the same boat. They’re achievable, everyday cuddy cabin boats rather than flagship purchases, the kind you see in real numbers at the boat ramp, not just in glossy reviews. For current pricing, build and quote your setup or talk to your local dealer.

Feature-Packed as Standard

A key point from the test: both boats come loaded with items that are optional extras on many competing brands. As tested, that included a baitboard, boarding ladder, step-through transom, twin batteries, plumbed livebait tank and bilge pump, a folding hard top with side clears, a toughened glass windscreen and a rocket launcher. Buyers are mostly just choosing electronics and whether to add a winch, rather than building up a base boat feature by feature.

The Fold-Down Hard Top Advantage

Both models share Bar Crusher’s fold-down hard top and windscreen system, which drops them low enough for many home garages. Current specs put the 615C at 2215mm and the 575C at 2210mm with the roof folded, with further options for lower clearance. Check your garage height against these figures before you buy.

How the Water Ballast Hull Works

Both boats are built on Bar Crusher’s Gen2® hull with Quickflow® water ballast. At rest, at anchor or on the drift, the ballast chamber floods with water through the transom (296L on the 575C, 314L on the 615C). That lowers the centre of gravity and pulls the chines down, so the boat resists rocking even with several people on one side. Combined with internal freeboard of 730mm (575C) and 780mm (615C), it keeps everyone feeling secure. When you get moving, the water is pushed out of the hull, and Delta Flare® provides the lift to get on the plane quickly instead of dragging the extra weight along.

Where the Two Models Actually Differ

The core differences come down to size and capacity rather than features. On current specs, the 615C is 400mm longer, 100mm wider in the beam, 50mm deeper internally and about 190kg heavier. It’s rated for 115–150hp compared with the 575C’s 90–140hp. It also carries a larger fuel tank in the SafeTank™ system (200L vs 160L) for extra range, and uses 4mm top side plates compared with 3mm on the 575C. Both work on single or tandem axle trailers. Most 575C owners run a single axle, while 615C owners doing longer coastal trips often prefer a tandem for highway stability.

The Test Results: Some Surprises

On the water, the results didn’t go the way you’d expect. As tested, the smaller 575C topped out faster: 62km/h at 6,000rpm versus 60km/h for the 615C. Fuel economy flipped expectations too. The bigger 615C returned 2.7km/L at 3,800rpm, compared with the 575C’s 2.6km/L at a higher 4,400rpm. Allowing a safe fuel reserve, that gives a working range of roughly 280km for the 575C and 370km for the 615C in ideal conditions.

Which One Should You Buy?

Based on the test: if you usually fish solo or as a pair, want easier towing and launching on a single-axle trailer, and value a lower price point, the 575C fits. If you regularly run with two or three people and want to handle bigger water and travel further, a little more economically over distance, the 615C is the better match. Want something more compact? Step down to the 535C. For more independent tests, see Bar Crusher’s media reviews.
