Starting at the Top Left Corner of Tasmania
The journey begins at Cape Grim, on Tasmania’s northwest tip. It’s a fitting starting point, with the wild, remote west coast running one way and the more familiar north coast running the other. From there, Hook, Line and Sinker’s Andrew Hart and Nick Duigan set out to do something few trailer boat owners would attempt: circumnavigate the entire island, a trip of roughly 750 nautical miles (about 1,390km).
A Route Through Tasmania’s Most Remote Water
The circumnavigation took the crew and their Bar Crusher 670HT through some of the state’s most varied and demanding coastline. They passed Wineglass Bay, ran down to Hobart, and went around to the remote natural harbour of Port Davey on the southwest coast. The route mixes exposed Southern Ocean conditions with pockets of shelter, great fishing and coastline most boat owners never get close to, let alone circle in their own boat.
Built for the Conditions
Running on Yamaha power, the boat covered the trip at 15 to 30 knots depending on the sea. That range reflects how much the weather and water changed over the journey, from easy running to the kind of Southern Ocean conditions that demand real caution. The 670HT’s Waveslicer deep-V handles the rough stuff, Quickflow ballast keeps it stable when you stop to fish, and the 230L SafeTank™ gives the range for long legs between fuel stops. Completing a trip like this in a trailerable hard top, not a dedicated expedition vessel, is a serious statement about what the 670HT is built to handle.
A trip like this takes careful planning: watching weather windows, sorting out fuel stops and carrying the right safety gear. The boat is only part of the equation.
Why This Trip Matters
Adventures like this aren’t just entertainment. They’re real-world proof of the boats behind them. A 750-nautical-mile circumnavigation of one of Australia’s most exposed coastlines, done in a production trailer boat, says more about capability than any spec sheet. It’s also part of Hook, Line and Sinker’s long 670-series track record with Bar Crusher, which includes towing right across Australia on a Bar Catch trailer and plenty of offshore deep-sea fishing.
