Why Trailer Depth Matters
Getting the trailer to the right depth is one of the simplest things that makes launching and retrieving either effortless or frustrating. Whether it’s your first time at the boat ramp or your hundredth, the same basic rule applies: it’s all about where the back rollers sit relative to the water.
The Right Depth: Back Rollers at (or Just In) the Water
As a general rule, when the trailer’s back rollers sit at water level, or just in the water, you’re set up correctly for launching and retrieving. At this depth, the boat should glide smoothly onto the trailer and settle straight into the keel rollers without any fuss. Every ramp is different in gradient and conditions, so use this as your starting point and adjust from there.
Too Shallow: The Boat Bounces
If the trailer isn't far enough, you’ll know quickly. The boat hits the trailer and bounces, moving around as it tries to find its way to the front instead of sliding smoothly into position.
Too Deep: The Boat Skids
It’s just as easy to back the trailer in too far. When it’s too deep, the boat floats up off the keel rollers instead of sitting in them. It skids around instead of tracking straight, which makes it harder to line up and load.
